Yawl Training Weekend

April 19 - April 21

PROGRAMME (subject to change)

FRIDAY 

CHART ROOM

19:00 ~ 21:00 Led by Richard Whitworth and supported by the Yawl training team

Bernoulli principle theory –
a practical demonstration using a model Dragon Flite 95 boat showing its effect on the slot between Jib and Main.

Non-sailing tips – on board equipment, pre-season checks, pre-race checks, de-rigging and bilge pumps – boat park, swinging mooring and pontoon

Sailing tips for racing in the harbour – rigging setup, pre-race test sail, tide, fairway, watch house flags, start line, rules

Saturday briefing – Muster point. Morning photography and video looking at rig and helm/crew choreography during tacking and gybing

Equipment check – VHF handsets and channel setting. Check each crew has Smartphone with eStella tracking app installed and registered

SATURDAY
ON THE WATER

Remember to take VHF handset, Smartphone with tracking switched on, drink, lunch and warm clothes.

08:30 – 10:00 Lifts out to pontoon from Batson, rig and transit yawls to mustering point outside Watch House.

10:00 – 11:00 Stills session: As yawls arrive at the muster point (TBA) – photos of each boat will be taken to capture your rig and slot setting.

11:00 – 12:00 Drone and Tracking session – Sailing exercises round windward/downwind course – pointing angle and crew choreography during tacking and gybing.

12:00 – 13:00 Lunch break: Up to you, but some of us might meet up on Fishermans Beach if fine weather.

14:00 – 16:00 Sailing Club Series Race 1 (MiniSeries race 1) Yawls in Fast Handicap 14:00 start.

16:00 – 17:00 Lifts to Normandy or Batson

DINING ROOM 
17:00 – 18:00 Cup of tea and Flapjacks at the club. Please order in advance on the club’s booking system


CHART ROOM 
18:00 – 19:30 Review of Stills session shots and Drone and Tracking session, highlights of race with stills, tracking and drone video.

19:30 – 1845 Sunday Briefing


DINNING ROOM
20:00 – Club close Non-sailors join crews.  All need to have booked and paid on the SYC booking system.


SUNDAY
ON THE WATER

Remember to take VHF handset, Smartphone with tracking switched on.
08:30 – 10:00 Lifts out to pontoon, rig and transit yawls to mustering point TBC.
10:00 – 12:00 Course comparison exercises. The fleet is pre-split into two groups each sailing a leg with a different strategy.

12:00 – 12:15 Whilst on the water: Richard will sum up the weekend over VHF. 
12:15 – 13:00 Yawls return to Batson, Moorings or pontoon, de-rig and cover, lifts to Normandy and Batson
